Newspaper weeds away
Plant your flowers, vegetables etc, work the nutrients in your soil. Layer wet newspapers around the plants overlapping as you go. Cover with mulch and forget about the weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.
Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

Beautiful photos--the cardinal is so red and the foliage so green--great shot. I also love the stamen on the columbines!

Beautiful! And all familiar to me. You can tell we live in pretty much the same part of the country. :-)
This cardinal is a "regular" the little guy is always in that particular tree standing guard it seems, his little female friend is usually close by too.
I love that photo of the cardinal. They're my favorite! I have a male and female who come twice every day for black the oil sunflowers I put out.
Your veggie garden sounds yummy!

Very, very beautiful pictures!
You're so lucky to have a regular cardinal! I've never even seen one in person. He's beautiful.
Megan-
We have cardinals regularly here, they are our state bird. This particular cardinal I think has a nest near by, I see him with a female quite often.
