Purple Martins

A friend of mine brought me this plaque. Isn't it cute? Below are just some shots around my garden.

I saw the neatest thing yesterday when I was mowing my yard, I know you ask... Karen why were you mowing? Well my 'lawn man' (he loves doing the lawn, not a gardener like me) WJ just got back from Alabama from visiting with his father who's been very sick and of course he was tired as he had driven all through the night.

But anyway I was mowing the back yard and about 5 purple martins started flying all around me. They were chirping, circling and diving all around, it seemed like a game to them. It was the neatest thing ever! I was laughing out loud at their antics.

When I was done mowing they went about their games amongst each other, and I just watched. I have never seen anything like it, I think they were showing off. Then my neighbor started mowing....
the martins flew over to show off for him. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen any bird do. Needless to say it made my day!

Good morning Karen. Love your photos. I cannot get good 'bird in flight' photos like that. Good shootin'.

I've noticed my barn swallows go crazy when I mow. I think it must cause the insects to fly up to escape the mower and get snatched by the birds.

Karen, how neat to have friends KNOW you are a gardener. The purple martins are so pretty and what great pictures. It is fun to watch the antics of birds.

Oh I so love purple martins. There aren't any near my house, but at my favorite garden center they have a house for them. They are always playing.

I agree with Roses and Lilacs. I think they were after the insects. Sometimes I think that they are going to run into me when I am mowing, they get so close. Great pictures!
