Newspaper weeds away
Plant your flowers, vegetables etc, work the nutrients in your soil. Layer wet newspapers around the plants overlapping as you go. Cover with mulch and forget about the weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.
Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

Gorgeous flowers! I too have a clematis in my front yard. We inherited the flower bed when we bought the house and they had it trellised up in a very nice way. Now, I'm clueless. Especially regarding flowers. I didn't know what it was and cut back all of the dry climbing viney bits last fall. Probably a mistake now that I've read up. The plant is coming back, but I probably cut off all of the gorgeous flowering parts! We'll see next year.
I love, love, love that color of Viola in the pot. Breathtaking!
